The country has adequate stocks of fertilizer, says the minister

Update : 06 Jan 2022, 12:19 PM

The government decided to conduct mobile courts at the upazila level for 30 days to control the price of fertilizer, Agriculture Minister Md Abdur Razzaque has said.

The minister was speaking with the reporters on Tuesday following a meeting between the fertilizers and ministry officials at the Secretariat, according to a media statement.

"The country has adequate stocks of fertilizer. But, due to some dishonest dealers’ farmers had to buy fertilizers at higher prices,” said Razzaque.

Immediate disciplinary action will be taken against dealers, traders and shopkeepers for selling fertilizers at exorbitant prices by spreading rumours and creating artificial crisis, he said.

“The mobile court will run for 30 days. If necessary, the courts will be conducted throughout the Boro season,” the minister said.

“Some 0.83 million tons of urea fertilizer is in stock against the demand of 0.31 million tons of urea fertilizer in the current month. Besides, 0.19 million tons of TSP fertilizer, 0.59 million tons of DAP and 0.31 million tons of MOP fertilizers are in stock against the demand,” he said.

“We have taken all-out preparation to ensure fertilizers at the local market as fertilizers are needed in this boro season. So, there will be no crisis of fertilizers,” he added.

Mentioning abnormal price hike of fertilizers in the international market, the minister said the international syndicate is exploiting countries like Bangladesh.

“We are strictly monitoring it and the field-level workers are active in that case," he said.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, who was present there, urged the farmers not to panic as there is no crisis of fertilizers now.
