JMB militant gets 5 years in terrorism case in Chittagong

Convict was arrested with 10 grenades and two suicide vests

A special tribunal in Chittagong on Tuesday sentenced a militant to five years and six months in prison over the seizure of 10 grenades and two suicide vests four years ago.

He was slapped with a fine of Tk20,000, Chittagong Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal Prosecutor Manoranjan Das confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.

Judge Abdul Halim delivered the verdict around 11am with the convict, Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, in the dock.

Both are members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

Rakibul’s associate, Ashfaqur Rahman, was also arrested during the drive January 1, 2018. His case is pending at the juvenile court as he was below 18 at the time of arrest.

Rakibul got five years under Section 6(2) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, and six months in prison under Section 8.

According to the case documents, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit raided a five-storey building in Subhpur bus terminal area under Sadarghat police station.

During the raid, they arrested Rakibul and Ashfaqur with ten grenades, two suicide vests, and two mobile phones in their possessions.

They also seized two hand-drawn maps, one holding information about significant government installations, including the Sadarghat police station.

Later, Inspector Rajesh Barua, a member of the city police's bomb disposal unit at the time, filed a complaint against the arrestees at Sadarghat police station.
