A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced three people including a woman to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the murder of her husband in 2012.

Dhaka Fourth Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Jesmin Ara Begum pronounced the judgment in presence of all the convicts. She also fined them Tk50,000 each to suffer one month imprisonment in default.

The three convicts are Shefali Begum, staff of Sir Salimullah Medical College, and her relatives Noyon and Akkas Bepari.

According to the case, victim Sayeeed Hasan Badal also used to work in the accounts section of the hospital and he married Shefali in 1999.

Shefali gave birth to a daughter after marriage. When Badal went to the United States in 2008, his relationship with his wife soured.

Badal came back from the US on January 1, 2012, and his nephew Jahid Hasan went to the airport to receive him along with Shefali.

After calling him to her house, she took Badal to a room, leaving his nephew downstairs.

After waiting for a long time, Shefali came to him and said his uncle got sick and they took him to the hospital. The attending doctors declared Badal dead at the hospital.

Later Badal’s brother Dr Shahid Hasan filed the case with Kotwali police station.

Police on June 24, 2012 filed a charge sheet against the three accused.

The tribunal on August 30, 2012 framed charges against the three. Sixteen prosecution witnesses testified in the case on different hearing dates, while the defense produced three witnesses for them.
