Ex-DIG Mizanur submits written statement in court, pleads not guilty

Other accused in the case is a former ACC director

Suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman and suspended director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Khandaker Enamul Basir on Wednesday submitted written statements before a Dhaka court in a money laundering case.

Accepting their statements, Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Fourth Special Judge’s Court of Dhaka fixed January 24 for recording closing arguments in the case.

Both the accused demanded justice in their statements, court sources said.

On July 16, 2019, ACC Director Sheikh Md Fanafillah filed the case with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka under the Money Laundering Prevention Act.

Both the officials were suspended from their organizations after the allegations of exchanging bribes were lodged against them.

On January 3, Mizanur and Enamul Basir pleaded not guilty in self defence during the trial. They said they would not produce any witness to vouch for their innocence, but would rather file written statements, and plead for time.

After hearing statements of the two accused, Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam adjourned the hearing till Wednesday.

On February 9, 2020, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh accepted the charge sheet against the duo.
