Death of Munia: Sister files no-confidence petition against police’s final report

A Dhaka court is scheduled to pass an order on the issue later on Tuesday

A no-confidence petition has been filed in response to the final investigation report that exonerated Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir from charges of abetting the suicide of Mosarat Jahan Munia.

Munia’s elder sister Nusrat Jahan submitted the petition with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury on Tuesday.

The magistrate recorded her statement after hearing the petition and is expected to issue an order on the matter later in the day.

Nusrat is also the plaintiff of the case in which Sayem was named.

During the hearing, she stated that Gulshan police station OC Abul Hasan, also the case investigation officer, told her that he would file a charge sheet against Sayem under Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder) and Section 9 (1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act (rape).

Nusrat claimed that OC Hasan failed to notify her before submitting the final report.

Abul Hasan had submitted the investigative report on July 19, clearing Sayem of the charges levelled against him in the case filed over the death of Munia, an HSC examinee with whom he had a secret relationship for about two years.

Nusrat had found her hanging body in her Gulshan apartment on the evening of April 26 and informed the police.

According to police, Sayem had been seen entering and leaving the Gulshan flat, where the 21-year-old started living alone in March. He was last seen there on April 20.

Munia was seen in the CCTV camera footage for the last time on the night of April 25, while entering the flat. She did not leave the flat on the day of the incident, they said.

On April 27, a Dhaka court had imposed a travel ban on Sayem following a petition filed by police.

On April 28, Sayem sought anticipatory bail from the High Court, which the next day declined to hear it. He has not been arrested since.
