A Khulna court on Thursday sent a local journalist to jail in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).
Journalist MA Sabur Rana, Rampal correspondent of the Daily Loksomaj and also the president of Rampal Press Club, was sent to jail after his bail petition was rejected by Shahidul Islam, judge of Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Court 1.
On April 20, Talukder Abdul Khaleq, mayor of Khulna City Corporation filed the DSA case against journalists—MA Sabur Rana and Abu Tayyab, Khulna bureau chief of NTV.

According to the case statement, the duo was accused of defaming the plaintiff by publishing multiple “false” and “baseless” news articles, bringing allegations of irregularities and corruption against the KCC mayor on social media.
Abu Tayyab was arrested on the same night the case was filed. He was recently released on bail after serving 21 days in jail.
On Thursday morning, MA Sabur Rana appeared before the court to seek bail but the court sent him to jail, rejecting his bail petition, Rana's lawyer Advocate Belal Hossain said.
The lawyer said they will seek bail from the High Court.
