A Rangpur court has recognized the paternal identity of a child born out of rape in Rangpur after 13 long years. It has also awarded the child inheritance rights to the property of the assaulter.
Rangpur Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal 2 Judge Md Roknuzzaman issued the order on Monday. The accused, Shafiqul Islam, was sentenced to imprisonment for life.
Shafiqul was also fined Tk1 lakh for his crimes.
According to the case dockets, a 14-year-old girl became pregnant on October 26, 2007, after Shafiqul raped her on false promises of marriage.
Later, on February 25, 2008, a case was filed over the incident against Shafiqul, his father, uncle and aunt.
The rape survivor gave birth to a baby boy on August 4, 2008. Later the DNA samples of the newborn baby and the assaulter were cross-matched following a court order.
The court on Monday convicted Shafiqul Islam after six people testified on behalf of the state in a lengthy trial.
