A court in Tangail today sentenced two persons to jail until death and two others to ten-year imprisonment for abducting and murdering a child in 2013.
The court also fined, the two convicts jailed until death -- Jahangir Hossain, 30, and Gautam Chandra Arya, 30 -- Tk1 lakh each, in default.
Khaleda Yasmin, judge of the Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
The other two accused sentenced to ten years in prison are – Hasan Ali, 17, and Sohel, 17.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, APP Shahanshah Mintu said that Masud Rana Soyan, granddaughter of Majeda Begum of Ruhuli village in Bhunapur upazila went to Matikata Government Primary School on September 30, 2013, at around 10:30am.
The convicts abducted the child on a motorcycle from the spot. The accused later demanded Tk5 lakh as ransom from the child’s family. The convicts killed the child, as they failed to get the ransom money,
Soon after the incident, on October 3, 2013, the child’s grandmother Majeda Begum filed a case with the Bhunapur police station.
Police submitted charge sheet against the accused upon completion of the investigation.
After examining the records and witnesses, the judge delivered the verdict this Tuesday noon.
However, Shamim Chowdhury Dayal and Khuku Rani Das -- the lawyers representing the convicts -- expressed their dissatisfaction over the verdict and said that they would appeal to the High Court against it “to get proper justice.”
