A Barisal court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment and fined him Tk1 lakh for raping a girl with disabilities.
Judge Abu Shamim Azad of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal passed the verdict on Wednesday afternoon with the convict Shariful Islam alias Morsalin, 26, of Ramarpul village in Muladi upazila of Barisal, at the dock.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune Ajibur Rahman, a bench assistant of the tribunal, said that on April 26, 2016, finding the girl home alone, Morsalin forcibly entered the kitchen and raped the girl. Morsalin fled the scene when the villagers came to aid the screaming girl.
The same day, the girl’s mother filed a case against Morsalin.
On July 10 of the same year, the case investigating officer, Muladi police station Sub-inspector (SI) Shahidul Islam, filed a charge sheet against the accused Morsalin.
“If the accused does not pay the fine of Tk1 lakh to the girl’s family within the next three months, the government will seize the movable and immovable property of the accused and settle the compensation,” said Advocate Faizul Haque Fayez, Special Public Prosecutor of the tribunal.
The girl's mother, however, said she was not happy with the verdict. She wants the convict to hang. She said that she would appear before the High Court and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina if necessary.
