2005 series bomb blast: Sylhet JMB leader gets life term

A Sylhet court on Sunday sentenced a leader of banned militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life imprisonment in a case filed over a series of bomb blasts in Sylhet in 2005.

The convict is Mawlana Abdul Aziz alias Hanif.

Sylhet Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Mominunessa delivered the verdict.

Charges were framed in the case on May 27, 2014.

According to the case statement, JMB militants detonated bombs at 29 locations, including 12 important areas, of Sylhet on August 17, 2005. A total 15 people, including a judge of a Speedy Trial Tribunal, were injured.

Subsequently, police filed 29 separate cases over the blasts under the Special Powers Act and most of them are still under trial.

On the day, around 500 bombs went off at 300 locations in 63 out of the 64 districts of the country. The bombs exploded in half an hour from 11:30am. 

Later, banned militant outfit JMB claimed responsibility.
