Jamaat chief, 185 others indicted in 2014 violence case

The case was filed over torching of a BRTC bus and hurling of crude bombs at a police vehicle from an anti-government procession in 2014

A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed charges against 186 people, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, in a case of violence filed with Motijheel police station in Dhaka in 2014.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Asaduzzman Nur passed the order after rejecting discharge petitions submitted by the defence lawyers of the accused in the case.

The court also set March 22, 2021 to start recording the testimony of witnesses.

Some of the accused are former lawmaker and Jamaat leader Hamidur Rahman Azad, Jamaat leaders Professor Mojibur Rahman, Dr Nesar Uddin, Fakhruddin Manik, Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud, Abu Saleh Md Yahya, Dr Samiul Haque Faruki, Dr TM Jafar Ullah, Moinul Islam, Jahirul Islam, Tawhidul Islam, KIM Iqbal, Abu Hossain and Hosne Mobarak.

According to the details of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Rafiqul Hasan filed a case with Motijheel police station on charges of torching a BRTC bus and hurling cocktails at a police vehicle from an anti-government procession at Motijheel area in the capital.

After investigation, SI Khandakar Jahid Ali submitted a charge sheet against the accused in the case on April 30, 2014.
