The High Court has rejected the bail petition of Ahsan Habib, a Health Technician of Regent Hospital Ltd in a case filed in connection with issuing fake Covid-19 certificates.

The bench of Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Md Atoar Rahman passed the order on Tuesday after hearing a bail petition filed by Habib.

Advocate Mansurul Haque Chowdhury stood for the petition while Deputy Attorney General Saifuddin Khaled opposed the bail as a state lawyer.

Earlier on July 14, a Dhaka court sent Habib to jail, and seven other employees of Regent Hospital Ltd, after their remand period came to an end.

On July 8, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury had placed them on a five-day remand each in the case.

On June 6, RAB raided the Uttara and Mirpur branches of the Regent Hospital on complaints that the hospital was issuing fake Covid-19 certificates, as well as charging exorbitant fees for Covid-19 testing and treatment of patients. RAB also found evidence of at least 6,000 fake Covid-19 test certificates during the raid.

The next day, RAB filed a case against 17 people, including its chairman Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim, with Uttara West police station.
