A Dhaka court has sentenced two domestic helps to death for the murder of former principal of Eden Mohila College Mahfuza Chowdhury Parvin.

Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 delivered the verdict on Sunday in presence of the convicts.

They are Rita Akter alias Swapna, 22, and Mosammat Ruma alias Reshma, 25.

After the verdict, the tribunal sent them to jail with conviction warrants.

Earlier on September 30, the court set October 4 for delivering its judgement after completion of arguments of both sides -- the prosecution and the defence.

On February 10, 2019, police recovered the body of Parvin from her Sukanya Tower flat at Elephant Road in Dhaka.

The victim's husband, Ismat Quadir Gama, vice chairman of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, filed a murder case with New Market police station against three people, including the housemaids.

Later, police arrested all the accused. Of them, Swapna and Reshma confessed to killing the former teacher.

On July 21 last year, New Market police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Alamgir Hossain Mazumder, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against the duo before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Another accused, Runu Begum, was dropped from the charge sheet as police did not find her involvement in the murder.

On February 9, 2020, the tribunal framed charges against the two accused.

A total of 27 out of 34 prosecution witnesses were testified before the court in the case.
