The High Court has issued a rule asking the government why it should not grant bail to Khandaker Enamul Basir, suspended director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) who has been arrested in connection with a bribery case.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the rule on Thursday after hearing the bail petition filed by the accused.

Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal appeared before the court on behalf of the bail petition while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC.

Earlier on July 16 last year, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Sheikh Mohammad Fanafillah filed the case over a bribery scandal.

On March 18, a Dhaka court framed charges against Basir, and on August 19, the court started the trial of the bribery case with deposition of the complainant.

A private TV channel had reported that suspended police officer Mizanur Rahman gave Tk40 lakh to Basir to geta clean chit in a corruption case filed against him.

DIG Mizan was an additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He was withdrawn on January 9, last year following the allegation of threatening a female news presenter of a private television channel.
