Nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker ANM Shamshul Islam and five others have been sent to jail over a case filed for vandalizing photos of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Chittagong District and Sessions Judge Md Ismail Hossain ordered sending the accused to jail after rejecting their bail prayer on Tuesday afternoon.

Former lawmaker ANM Shamshul Islam is also the chairman of the trustee board of International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC).

The five other accused are Ahsan Ullah, Jamaat leader and IIUC Trustee Board member, Mahbub Rahman, dean of Business Faculty of IIUC, Kawsar Ahmed, former proctor of the university and Jamaat leader, Nizam Uddin, former assistant Proctor and Shafiul Alam, an official of the university.

Public Prosecutor AKM Sirajul Islam of District Court said that the accused obtained interim bail from the High Court.

“The High Court ordered them to surrender before the subordinate court. On Tuesday, they surrendered before the court and prayed for bail. However, the court ordered them to be sent to jail after rejecting their bail petition,” said the PP.

Earlier on February 10, Kamal Uddin, assistant secretary for law affairs of Chittagong south district unit and additional public prosecutor of Chittagong Judges Court, filed a case with Sitakunda police station against six people including the nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami on charges of vandalizing the photos of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The plaintiff in the case alleged that 70 cadres of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, backed by the six accused went on a rampage and vandalized the photos of Bangabandhu and the Prime Minister at Chhatra League office on the university campus on January 29.
