The husband and father-in-law of a woman who was murdered by the duo over dowry were given death penalty by a Tangail court on Monday afternoon.
The convicted Johirul Islam, 25, and his father Mojnu Miya, 55 were also fined Tk1 lakh each by Women and Child Repression Prvention Tribunal Judge Khaleda Yasmin.
The convicts are currently on bail and were not present during the sentencing although they were supposed to, said Nasimul Akhter Nasim, special Public Prosecutor (PP) of the tribunal.
Nasimul said: "Johirul was married to Taslima Akhter, daughter of Salim Uddin, of Kuthiboyra village in Bhuapur upazila. After the marriage Taslima was often tortured for dowry.”
"On November 27, of 2016, Taslima was murdered as the woman's family had failed to pay a dowry of Tk1.5 lakh and her body was dumped into the Jamuna river."
Police recovered Taslima's body from the Gobindashi Ghat area in Bhuapur three days after the murder. Later Johirul and his father were arrested after a case was filed against them by the Taslima’s father, added Nasimul.
