The Appellate Division on Thursday upheld the High Court order that stayed the trial proceedings against six BNP leaders including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in six separate vandalism and arson cases.
The other accused BNP leaders are -- Abdul Awal Mintoo, Selima Rahman, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and Aman Ullah Aman.
Barrister Ehsanur Rahman, one of the lawyers for the BNP leaders, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said: “The apex court also asked the High Court to hear and dispose of the rules issued in connection with the cases.
“But the court did not mention any time frame.”
A full bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the orders after virtually hearing six separate leave to appeal petitions filed by the state seeking stay on the High Court orders.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state while AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon stood for the BNP leaders.
The High Court in 2017 stayed the trial proceedings in six vandalism and arson cases filed against the aforementioned BNP leaders.
These cases were filed with different police stations in 2015.
