A Dhaka court has granted bail to Imran Hossain Sumon, a senior reporter at ATN News, in a case filed under the Pornography Control Act and Digital Security Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Noman Bhuiyan passed the order on Sunday, after hearing a bail petition filed by Sumon’s lawyer Tuhin Hawlader.
On July 19, Sumon was arrested from Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area in the case over spreading of rumours on social media.
The next day, he was remanded in police custody for a day by another court — after which, he was sent to jail.
The case was filed at Pallabi police station by Akhi Bhadra, a senior presenter of ATN News, over obscene messages sent to her phone.
Police later nabbed a youth in connection with the case, who reportedly told investigators that he had sent the messages on Sumon’s orders.
The case was handed over to the Detective Branch of police on July 14.
