HC: How did GK Shamim’s bodyguards get gun licence?

Shamim was arrested with his bodyguards on September 20 last year

Update : 03 Mar 2020, 08:53 PM

The High Court has asked how and under what consideration four bodyguards of GK Shamim were given licences to carry firearms.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam issued the order on Tuesday after hearing a bail petition for the bodyguards.

The court also asked the defence lawyer to submit information on the income tax returns of the four bodyguards – Md Jahidul Islam, Md Shahidul Islam, Md Kamal Hossain, and Md Samshad Hossain – on Wednesday.

Advocate Md Shamim Sarder stood for the four, while Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik stood for the state, and Advocate Kurshid Alam Khan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On February 3, the same High Court bench asked why the four men would not be given bail, after their bail plea was rejected by the trial court on December 24 last year.

Earlier on September 20, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested businessman and Jubo League leader Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim with seven of his bodyguards, also seizing Tk1.80 crore in cash, Tk165.27 crore worth of fixed deposit receipts (FDR), alcohol and firearms, from Niketan in Dhaka’s  Gulshan area.

He was later expelled from the ruling party’s youth front.

The other three bodyguards are Delwar Hossain, Morad Hossain and Anisul Islam.

RAB filed several cases against GK Shamim under the Narcotics Control Act, the Money Laundering Prevention Act, and the Arms Act.
