The High Court has directed the Bangladesh Telecommunications and Regulatory Authority (BTRC) to have personal pictures of actress and director Mithila and Fahmi removed as soon as possible from the internet platform including Facebook and other online news portals.

The same bench also ordered BTRC to remove the picture of Stamford University’s student Rumpa from facebook and other online news portals.

The student died under mysterious circumstances on December 4.

The bench of Justice M Enetur Rahim and Justice Md Mustafizur Rahman issued the rule with directives passed after hearing a writ

The rule asked the respondents to reply within four weeks why their failure in regulating the online media, news portals and social media in publishing news of individuals together with explicit images should not be declared as illegal?

Barrister Tahsina Tasnim Mridu stood for the writ.

On Thursday, the lawyer filed the writ challenging the failure of the concerned authorities in regulating the online media, news portals and social media in publishing news with explicit, private, indecent pictures/materials. Secretaries of the Information Ministry, Home, Ministry of Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology, and chairman of BTRC were made respondents for the writ.
