The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court Division order granting six-month interim bail to BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid.

The bail was granted in a case filed over abusing duty-free import facilities on Wednesday, reports UNB.

A four-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed a "no order" on the petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said they would file a regular leave-to-appeal petition after receiving the verdict copy.

On Tuesday, ACC filed the petition seeking a stay on Monday’s High Court order granting interim bail to Harun, and staying the subordinate court’s Tk 50 lakh fine.

Chamber Judge Justice Md Nuruzzaman sent the appeal to the regular bench fixing Wednesday for the hearing.

On October 21, a court sentenced Harun, MP from Chapainawabganj 3 constituency, to five-year imprisonment and fined him Tk50 lakh in the case.

The court also sentenced former NTV managing director Enayetur Rahman Bappi and Sky Autos owner Ishtiak Sadek to two years and three years in prison, respectively.

According to the prosecution, Harun imported a duty-free vehicle at Tk11.65 lakh in 2004. Later, he in collusion with Imtiaz sold out the vehicle to Enayetur Rahim at Tk97 lakh.

Enayetur and Ishtiak were also fined Tk1 lakh and Tk40 lakh, respectively.

Later, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Yunus Ali of Tejgaon Police Station filed a case against MP Harun and two others on March 17, 2007.

In July, 2007, ACC Assistant Director Monayem Hossain after investigation submitted a charge-sheet before the court against the trio.
