A Dhaka court has deferred the verdict of a case filed for killing eighth grader Suraiya Akther Risha in 2016.
Judge KM Imrul Qayes of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court reset the date to October 10 on Sunday.
The date was reset as Obaidul Khan, the lone accused in the case, could not be produced before the court by the Kashimpur Central Jail authorities, acting Court Inspector Moinul Islam said.
Earlier, the court set the date of delivering the verdict after concluding arguments from both the prosecution and the defence on September 11.
November 14, 2016, After completion of the investigation, the then officer-in-charge (OC) (investigation) Md Ali Hossain of Ramna Model police station, also the investigation officer of the case, pressed the charge sheet against Obaidul to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court.
Obaidul was a tailor at Baishakhi Ladies Tailors at Elephant Road’s Eastern Mollika Shopping Mall.
The charge sheet mentioned the murder charge brought against Obaidul was primarily proved and he should be brought under trial.
On August 24, 2016, victim mother Tania Hossain filed the case against Obaidul under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act-2000 (Amendment 2003) and under Section of 324/326 and 307 of penal code with the Ramna police station.
Later the case was turned into a murder case after Risha’s death at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on August 28.
The court on April 17, 2017, framed charges against Obaidul in the case.
According to the case, Suraiya Akhter Risha, 14, daughter of businessman Md Ramzan Ali and a resident of Bangshal in old Dhaka, was stabbed by her stalker Obaidul near her school in broad daylight on August 24 and succumbed to her injuries at DMCH four days later.
She was a student of Willes Little Flower School and College in the capital.
The complainant also alleged that a few months ago Risha went to Baishakhi tailorsto make a cloth. She gave her mobile phone number to the shop’s employee Obaidul for communicating. After that Obaidul had been stalking her and harassing over phone calls.
Risha’s mother even warned him for his offence.
Obaidul fled the capital after stabbing her. He was arrested on August 31, 2016, from Nilphamari and confessed his crimes during the primary investigation.
