Two cases have been lodged against Kalabagan Krira Chakra Club President Shafiqul Alam Firoz, while another 3 cases were filed against Awami Jubo League leader Golam Kibria Shamim yesterday.

A Dhaka court has placed Shafiqul Alam Firoz on a 10-day remand for the two cases under the arms and narcotics acts, filed by Rapid Action Battalion [RAB] for running an illegal casino at his club.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhtar passed the order after denying Firoz bail.

On Friday, RAB apprehended Firoz, who is also a leader of Bangladesh Krishak League. They caught him around 1:30 pm, before raiding the club in search of a potential illegal casino.

They also detained four other staffs of the club during the drive.

The elite force laid siege to the club since the afternoon and started the drive sometime after 7 pm on Friday that ended around 7:40 pm.

In a separate matter, RAB has also filed three cases against Awami Jubo League leader Golam Kibria Shamim, a day after arresting him during a raid.

Shamim has been remanded for 10 days in two cases, while the seven bodyguards of Shamim were remanded for four days each in connection with the case filed under the Firearms Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhter passed the order yesterday evening after police sought a 14-day remand in the cases, one filed under the Firearms Act, and another under Narcotics Control Act

Shamim and his seven bodyguards were detained with firearms on Friday by RAB.

Gulshan police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Kamruzzaman said: "We have filed three separate cases against GK Shamim over narcotics, firearms, and money laundering charges."

Shamim is the managing director, and chairman of the GKB & Company (Pvt) Limited.

RAB raided his office in Gulshan's  Niketon area on Friday and seized Tk 1.80 crore in cash, Tk 165.27 crore worth of fixed deposit receipts (FDR), alcohol, and firearms.

Known as an influential contractor in Sabujbagh, Basabo, and Motijheel areas, Shamim made headlines for his power in securing Public Works Department contracts.

According to several Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal members, Shamim was an active member of the organization — the youth wing of BNP.

He later joined Jubo League and has been identifying himself as the central cooperative affairs secretary.

However, Juba League Chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury said Shamim has never been a member of Jubo League.
