The High Court has observed that no one in the country should consider themselves a VIP (very important person) other than the president and the prime minister.

The High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with the comment while hearing a writ petition filed seeking Tk3 crore as compensation for the family of Titas Ghosh.

The bench also said it will deliver its directives after receiving the probe report over the incident.

On July 25, road accident victim Titas died in an ambulance on his way to Dhaka after the ferry service was delayed for three hours while waiting for the arrival of a joint secretary.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Mohammad Zahir Uddin filed the petition on Tuesday on behalf of a rights organization, Legal Support and People’s Right.

The petition also requested the court to direct the government to take steps so the ferries prioritize ambulances carrying critical patients, order the government to conduct an inquiry into the incident surrounding Titas' death, and to take appropriate legal action against people responsible for it.

The secretary of the Shipping Ministry, Road Transport and Highway Division, the inspector general of police, and the BIWTC chairman were made respondent to the writ, among others.

The court also directed the public administration secretary for appointing an additional secretary to conduct an enquiry into the incident and submit the enquiry report before this court in three weeks.
