The High Court has dismissed a lower court verdict to pardon Nur Hossain, principal accused and death-row convict in the Narayanganj seven murder case, in another and separate corruption case.
A High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukdar and Justice KM Hafizul Alam gave the order on Wednesday, instructing the lower court to end the case trial within six months.
The bench gave the order after hearing a revision petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on April 23, 2015.
The crimes of Nur Hossain
On November 28, 2002, the now defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission filed an extortion case against Nur Hossain for embezzling Tk5 lakh from a land development project in 1997, abusing his power as chairman of Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj union parishad.
On July 19, 2011, the ACC lodged the case charge sheet with the lower court, but the Special Judges’ Court of Narayanganj declined the filing, thus exonerating Nur, on the grounds that the filing of the case was delayed.
Following the case dismissal, the ACC filed a revision petition with the High Court on April 23, 2015, challenging the decision of the lower court.
On June 28, 2015, the High Court issued a ruling, asking concerned government officials to clarify why the exemption order of the lower court could not be scrapped, a process eventually resulting in Wednesday’s verdict.
Advocate Md Shafikul Islam represented ACC at the hearing, and Deputy Attorney General AKM Aminuddin Manik represented the state.
