A High Court bench has asked the state to increase security along the border to prevent suspects of the gruesome murder of Rifat Sharif in Barguna from fleeing the country.
On Thursday afternoon, a court bench comprising Justices FRM Nazmul Ahsan and KM Kamrul Kader asked Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar to ask the inspector general of police to issue a red alert as Barguna is close to the Indian border.
Three people hacked at Rifat Sharif, 22, in front of his wife outside Barguna Government College on Wednesday morning. Rifat was admitted to Barguna General Hospital, and later transferred to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The deputy attorney general informed the High Court that the deputy commissioner, officer-in-charge, and superintendent of police in Barguna have been contacted.
He said that a case has been filed by Rifat’s father and a suspect is already in police custody.
The court also remarked that the murder in broad daylight cast aspersions on the role of police.
It also asked to provide Rifat’s widow – who tried to fight off the murderers in vain – with more security.
The court scheduled next Thursday, July 4, to hear developments in the case.
