The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has started the hearing of war criminal and Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam.
The four-member bench of the Appellate Division—headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain—began the hearing on Tuesday.
Advocate Joynal Abedin Tuhin stood for Azhar and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam—along with his other deputies—represented the state.
The appeal was filed challenging the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict that sentenced Azhar to death.
On December 30, 2014, ICT 1 gave Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam a death sentence for his war crimes committed in Rangpur. He was found guilty on five of six charges.
Azhar filed his appeal on January 28, 2015.
