A Manikganj court have sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape a child of Gior upazila, Manikganj, in 2010.
Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge, Mohammad Ali Hossain, awarded the verdict on Thursday afternoon.
The convict Md Emdadul Haque, who is currently on the run, hails from Bhatiyakhara village in Bera upazila of Pabna, confirmed Public Prosecutor AKM Nurul Huda of the tribunal.
Emdadul was also fined Tk10,000, failing which the imprisonment period will be extended by two months.
According to the case statement, on August 29, Emdadul attempted to rape the minor in Sreedham-nagar market area of Gior upazila.
Following a case filed by the girl's father, the court found sufficient evidence of the incident, and sentenced the accused.
