A Kurigram court has sent 10 people including seven HSC examinees to jail in a case filed under the Pornography Control Act allegedly for filming a girl after stripping her naked in Belgacha union of Kurigram sadar upazila. The court of Kurigram Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Mizanur Rahman sent them to jail on Tuesday after they were produced before his court. The court also set April 9 for hearing a bail petition moved by Fakhrul Islam, a lawyer for the accused, who were arrested from different areas in Kurigram town on Monday. According to police, the case’s prime accused Rashedul Islam, 19, son of Hossain Ali of Keranipara village in the district’s Nageshwari upazila, had developed a love affair with the girl. Rashedul, who was appearing in this year’s HSC examination, took the girl to the house of one of his friends Md Sohel late last year and lured her into having a sexual intercourse with him, while his friends including Sohel were filming the incident. Minhajul Alam, additional superintendent of police in Kurigram, said: “Acting on information gleaned from Rashedul, we arrested Sohel and others and seized the 37-minute footage from them.” Threatening the victim’s family with releasing the footage, the accused also extorted over Tk1 lakh and gold ornaments, the family alleged. Being helpless with Rashedul demanding even more money, her uncle lodged the case with Kurigram sadar police station against 11 people. Of them, one is on the run. Abdus Sobhan, officer-in-charge of the police station, said Rashedul was accused of both rape and pornography charges while the others were implicated under the pornography act. Drive is going on to arrest the absconding accused.
