HC to Green Line: Pay partial compensation to Rasel by 3pm

Green Line owner Md Alauddin was ordered to pay victim Rasel by 3pm on Wednesday

Update : 10 Apr 2019, 12:07 PM

The High Court has directed Green Line Paribahan to pay a portion of the Tk50 lakh compensation owed to Rasel Sharkar, who lost his leg in an accident in Dhaka last year.

The High Court bench of Justices FRM Nazmul Ahasan and KM Kamrul Quader ordered Green Line owner Md Alauddin to pay Rasel at least a part of the compensation by 3pm on Wednesday, after he sought a time extension to make the payment.

Rasel, along with his family members, were present at the court during the hearing.

The High Court bench added that the transportation company must pay partial compensation to Rasel, on humanitarian grounds—and to show respect to the court order—as Green Line had not compensated the victim.

The High Court has scheduled another hearing in this regard at 3pm Wednesday.

On 31 March, a four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain upheld a High Court order, directing Green Line Paribahan to pay Tk50 lakh in compensation to Rasel Sharkar after hearing an appeal filed by Green Line.

The court ordered the respondent to pay the compensation to the victim by April 3.

In response, Bangladesh Bus Owners Association filed a writ petition on Tuesday with the Supreme Court, in an effort to evade compensating Rasel.

On April 28 last year, a luxury Green Line coach rear-ended the car Rasel was driving. The accident occurred on the slope of Mayor Md Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar, and caused Rasel to step outside of his car to assess the damage.

Although he signaled the bus not to drive away, bus driver Kabir Hossain, in his attempt to flee the scene, ran over Rasel, severing his left leg from the thigh down in the process.

After being informed, police impounded the bus and detained Kabir from near the National Press Club.
