A court in Joypurhat on Sunday sent 47 Awami League activists to jail on surrender in a case filed for March 10 post-poll violence in the Kalai upazila in the district.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Iqbal Bahar gave the order after rejecting their bail petitions.
They surrendered before the court and sought bail in the afternoon after three weeks of filing the case over the incident.
According to sources, two people were killed, and 10 other were injured in a clash between the supporters of two candidates in Joypurhat on March 16 after the Kalai upazila election.
The incident occurred in the Moslemganj Bazar area of the upazila around 8pm on the day.
The deceased were Aftab Hossain from the Monnapara village of Kalai Punot Bazar who died in the morning on March 16, and Ratan Mohonta from Mahishhopara who died around 4am on March 17.
According to eyewitnesses and Kalai police station sources, although Minfuzur Rahman Milon, who was nominated by the Awami League (AL) was elected chairman, the AL nominated female and male vice-chairmen were defeated in the upazila parishad (UP) election.
An altercation ensued regarding the matter, and at one point of the argument, the vice-chairmen supporter and local UP Chairman Wazed Ali beat up a supporter of the upazila chairman.
As a result of the beating, the supporters of both candidates collided in a clash.
Aftab died on the way to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College in Bogra, and Ratan died the next day.
Golam Rabbani, son of Aftab Hossain filed a case accusing 150 people on March 17.
