The newly-elected executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) is to take charge starting Thursday.
Voting on March 13 and 14 at the SCBA’s Shaheed Shafiur Rahman Auditorium, decided on the new executive committee.
Awami League-backed white panel candidate, Advocate AM Aminuddin, is to be president, while BNP-backed blue panel candidate, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, will be the secretary.
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya’s (blue panel) Abdul Baten and Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad’s (white panel) Md Jasim Uddin were elected vice presidents.
The blue panel’s Md Imam Uddin is to be treasurer, while the white panel’s Kazi Shamsul Hasan Shuvo and the blue panel’s Sharif U Ahmed, secured the posts of assistant secretaries.
Three member candidates were elected from the Awami League-backed white panel, while four were elected from the BNP faction.
Outgoing committee president, Advocate Zainul Abedin, attended a press meet with other executive members yesterday noon. He commented on the various initiatives taken in the last one year towards the development of the SCBA, adding how the government had on numerous occasions interfered with the judiciary, and how they had protested such moves at every turn.
The outgoing SCBA Secretary (a panel lawyer for Zia), Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, said the panel was aware of Khaleda Zia’s bail on parole from media reports, but there have yet to be any offers from the government.
Upon the outgoing president’s comments regarding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, two Awami League-backed white panelists of the outgoing committee, Abdur Razzak (former assistant secretary) and Sahana Parvin (former member), left the meeting.
