High Court halts activities of 24 housing companies

They are accused of filling up canals, rivers, ponds and other water bodies illegally

The High Court (HC) has imposed a stay order on the activities of 24 housing companies over allegations of filling up canals, rivers, ponds and other water bodies under Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur.

A High Court division bench comprising of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order accepting a writ petition filed by rights group Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on Sunday.

The 24 housing companies are United Purbachal Lands Limited, AG Property Limited, Navana Real Estate, Biswas Builders Limited, Nilachal Housing Limited, Bagan Bilash, Rupayan Lands Limited, Adarsha Ideal Limited, Tepantar Housing, Metropolitan Christian Cooperative Housing, Manjil Housing and Development Limited, Shikder Royal City, Kapatakkha Green City, Divine Holding Limited, Shatabdi Housing, Swarna Chaya Real Estate, Vision 21 and Development Limited, Ocean Heaven Limited, SFL Chandrima Limited, Grump International, North-South Housing and Fare Deal Shipping Limited.

“Apart from imposing the status quo, the court also asked Gazipur deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, Kaliganj upazila nirbahi officer and officer-in-charge of Kaliganj police station to file report on executing its order within two months,” HRPB council Advocate Manjil Morshed said.
