A Sirajganj court has sent former Sirajganj 4 (Ullapara) lawmaker M Akbar Ali to jail, rejecting his bail plea in a number of cases including those filed over torching of a train and sabotage charges.

District Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Shahadat Hossain Pramanik issued the order on Wednesday afternoon, after Akbar surrendered to his court.

Akbar, also a member of BNP’s central executive committee, was sent to the jail later in the evening.

His lawyer Rafiq Sarkar and court police Inspector Md Mostofa Kamal both said that Akbar had total 13 cases against him.

The BNP leader surrendered before the court earlier in the day and pleaded for bail in all the cases.

The judge granted him bail in seven cases and rejected in the other six. Then the court ordered him to jail.

With BNP’s ticket, Akbar was elected MP from Sirajganj 4 constituency in the 1991 and 2001 general elections.

He had also served as the party’s Ullapara upazila unit president for a long time.
