The Supreme Court has stayed the High Court order that allowed Jessore 2 BNP candidate Sabira Sultana to contest general elections.

The seven-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order on Sunday, after hearing two petitions filed by the state and the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Following the order, convicted people will not be able to contest the elections, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khansaid said.

Previously, on Saturday, the chamber judge of the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order and sent the petition to a regular bench.

On November 30, the High Court stayed the conviction and sentence of BNP Jessore 2 constituency candidate Sabira Sultana – in a graft case – clearing the way for her to participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Later on Saturday, the state and the ACC filed petitions challenging the order.

On July 12, Special Judge Court 7 handed down a six-year prison term and Tk5,000 fine to former chairman of Jhikargachha Upazila Parishad Sabira Sultana for illegally amassing wealth.
