Ex-lawmaker Monirul Haque Chowdhury has been sent to jail in a case filed over the bus arson attack in Comilla on February 3, 2015.
Monirul, a senior BNP leader, is also a coordinator of Jatiya Oikya Front, adviser to BNP Chief Khaleda Zia, and had served as a lawmaker for Comilla 10 constituency.
On Wednesday, Monirul appeared before a Comilla district and sessions judge court and pleaded for bail, after completion of his interim bail period.
After rejecting his bail plea the court ordered him to jail.
The matter was confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune by the BNP leader’s lawyer Advocate Nazmus Sadat.
The court also set November 11 for hearing the bail plea of Khaleda Zia who is also an accused of this case.
According to the case details, eight people were killed and at least 20 others injured when assailants hurled a petrol bomb at a bus in Jogmohanpur of Chouddagram during the 20-party alliance’s movement on February 3, 2015.
Chouddagram police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Nuruzzaman filed a case against 77 people over the incident.
Six senior BNP leaders, including Chairperson Khaleda Zia, were accused in the case. Among the accused, three died and five were discharged from the charge sheet.
Investigating Officer Inspector Firoz Hossain (DB) submitted the charge sheet against Khaleda Zia and 69 others to the Comilla Court.
