Pro-Awami League and pro-BNP lawyers have scuffled following heated arguments at the Supreme Court premises over organizing a press conference at a designated common room for all lawyers.

Witnesses said the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the south hall of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) building.

The SCBA, leadership of which is dominated by pro-BNP lawyers, had called the press briefing over alleged violation of seniority during the latest appointment of judges in the Appellate Division.

On Monday, President Md Abdul Hamid had appointed three new apex court judges, who were sworn in on Tuesday.

The SCBA organized the press briefing at the room used as a lounge for lawyers.

Soon after, an argument broke out between the pro-Awami League lawyers, including Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, and the pro-BNP lawyers over the latter’s decision to use the room for their event.

SCBA Secretary Barrister MA Mahbub Uddin Khokan, who was present there, had condemned the disruption and subsequent scuffle.
