The driver and the owner of the Faisal Ganjeraaj Paribahan bus involved in the accident that killed one-year-old Akifa have been given bail by a Kushtia court.
The bail plea was accepted by Kushtia Senior Judicial Court Judge MM Morshed Monday afternoon.
Earlier, on Sunday, owner Zainul Abedin was arrested from Faridpur bus stand by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and sent to Kushtia district prison. On Monday morning, driver Mohid Miya alias Khokon surrendered to the court and plead for bail. Afterwards, both were granted bail by the court.
The incident came just as a special 10-person probe team from Dhaka was investigating the scene of the crime. The team also visited Akifa’s home to speak to her parents. They were also accompanied by members of local government agencies.
On August 28, a Faridpur-bound Faisal Ganjeraaj Paribahan bus from Rajshahi was stopped at the Chourhash intersection bus stop in Kushtia when the driver accelerated the vehicle without warning. This caused the bus to hit Rina Begum, who was crossing the street with her 1-year-old child Akifa. The impact caused Akifa to fall from Rina’s arms and onto the road.
Both were rushed to the hospital, but while Rina got better, Akifa was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she eventually died two days later on August 30.
On the night of August 30, Akifa’s father filed a case against the owner, driver, and supervisor of the bus under the Road Transport Act.
