A court in Chandpur has ordered placing district Awami League Joint Secretary General Advocate, Jahirul Islam, on a two-day remand on suspicion of murdering his wife, Shahin Sultana Fancy, a Mohila Awami League activist and principal of a Chandpur college.

Chandpur Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Syed Mosharraf Kaiser Yusuf, gave the remand order on Wednesday when the alleged perpetrators, Jahirul and his second wife, Julekha Begum, appeared in court.

Case Investigation Officer, Sub Inspector (SI) Mohiuddin of the Detective Branch of Police (DB), sought a five-day remand but the court granted a two-day remand instead, said sources at the court.

The court also granted permission to detain and question Julekha.

Court Inspector Ibrahim Khalil, serving the state in this case, told the court: “The opposing prosecutors of the case found Jahirul to be the prime suspect. The police are conducting an investigation in this regard. So placing him on remand is crucial.”

The defending prosecutor, General Editor of Chandpur Bar, Abdullah Al-Mamun, sought bail telling the court: “Jahirul is former president of  the Chandpur Bar Association, and a reputable politician. He must have been framed by a third party.”

Sultana Fancy, 50, was found lying in a pool of blood at her own residence in Faridaganj upazila around 11:30p on Monday.

A charge was filed by Fancy's brother, Forkan Khan, with Chandpur model station on Tuesday, citing four suspects.

Jahirul and Julekha were charged and detained as prime suspects.

Another  brother of Fancy, Abu Nayeem, believes the murder motive was Johirul's second marriage a few years back, without Fancy's consent, which gave rise to disputes within the family.

He also said: “I believe she was murdered right after she returned home from work as she was still dressed and was carrying her purse.”

Forkan believes the murder was premeditated.

Chandpur model police station Officer-in-Charge, Waliullah Oli, said: “The victim was most likely struck with something sharp on her head which caused her death.”
