A Joypurhat court has sentenced a college teacher to life in prison, in addition to a fine of Tk1 lakh, for throwing acid on a female college student in Kalai upazila in 2013.
Women and Children Tribunal-2 and Additional Sessions Judge Dr Abdul Majid gave the verdict on Tuesday.
Saiful Islam Babu taught philosophy at Gobiganj Islampur-Piyarapur IGM School and College. At that time, the victim Sadia Islam Shoma, was a grade 11 student at Joypurhat Kalai Women's College.
According to court statements, on August 13, 2013, Shoma was sleeping in her own room at her house in the Kalai municipality area. At around 2am, Saiful, who is also Shoma's uncle, threw acid on her through her bedroom window, burning Shoma's face and parts of her body.
While escaping, Saiful was caught by villagers. Shoma was admitted to a local health complex, and later to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bagura. Later, she was transferred to ASF Foundation in Dhaka after her situation deteriorated.
Shoma's father Abdus Salam filed a case in Kalai police station accusing Saiful Islam on August 21, 2013.
The verdict was declared in the presence of the accused Saiful Islam.
