Update : 07 Jan 2018, 05:57 PM
The High Court has ordered the Election Commission to dispose of the petition requesting a recount of the votes cast during the recently held Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) election, filed by the defeated BNP candidate, within 30 days. The High Court bench of Justice M Moazzem Hossain and Md Suhrawardy issued the order on Sunday. Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan and Barrister Sanjid Siddiqui represented the petitioner at the court. Sanjid Siddiqui said: "On December 27, BNP candidate Kawsar Zaman Babla submitted an application to the Election Commission requesting a recount of the votes in the RpCC polls. However, upon seeing that no action had been taken in this regard, a writ petition was filed with the High Court.” Responding to the writ, the court then ordered the Election Commission to settle the debate within 30 days, he added. Babla filed the writ on January 4. The RpCC election took place on December 21 last year, in which Jatiya Party mayoral candidate Mostafijar Rahman Mostafa won with 160,489 votes. Against him, Awami League candidate Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu received 62,400 votes, and BNP candidate Kawsar Jaman Babla received 35,136 votes. This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
