Mushfiqur Rahim’s father acquitted of murder charges

Update : 19 Dec 2017, 11:01 PM
A Bogra court on Sunday acquitted 15 people including former national Test squad skipper Mushfiqur Rahim’s father of charges of being involved with the killing of a 15-year-old in May. Father of the victim, Mashuk Ferdous, lodged the case with Bogra Sadar police station on May 16, alleging Mushfiq’s father Mahbub Hamid Tara, and uncle Mejbah-ul-Hamid, a local municipality councillor of Awami League, were involved in the killing of his son over previous enmity regarding a position in the managing committee of Matidali High School in Bogra town. The court of Bogra’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shyam Sundar Roy only accepted charges against one 14-year-old Bidarul Islam Nayeem, who previously confessed in front of the court, under Section 164 of Criminal Procedure Code, regarding his involvement in the killing.

The court on Sunday heard a no-confidence plea from the plaintiff, Emdadul Haq, regarding the state of the charge sheet submitted by the case’s investigating officer, Bogra Additional Superintendent of police Hasan Shamim Iqbal. In his petition, Emdadul alleged that in order to extend all-out support to the family of the senior national team player, Bogra police did not produce suspect Naim for 96 hours after making the arrest, rather the 14-year-old was illegally kept in detention so that he can be persuaded to act like a patsy. After the order, plaintiff Emdadul Huq, an executive member of Jasad (Hasanul Haq Inu-led faction), told reporters on court premises that he will challenge this order in higher courts.

According to the case statement, Mashuk’s neighbour Naim took the former out in Bogra’s Matidali area around 8:30pm on May 14. Later, Mashuk was found lying near his home with grievous head injuries. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead the same night. According to Bogra police, Naim confessed to killing Mashuk following a quarrel over a cricket match. He has been sent to Juvenile Correctional Centre in Jessore. A High Court bench on June 5 granted Mahbub Hamid anticipatory bail in the case.
