More cases filed against Mahmudur over derogatory comments on Bangabandhu

Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman has been sued in several other districts over derogatory remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members. Jessore district unit Awami League's Executive Member and Kashimpur Union Parishad Chairman Moshiar Rahman Sagar filed a sedition case against Mahmudur with the court of Judicial Magistrate Md Shahinur Rahman Monday. The court took cognizance of the complaint and fixed Tuesday for giving its order. The complainant stated that while speaking at a program at Jatiya Press Club on December 1, Mahmudur Rahman had made false and defamatory remarks about the creation of Bangladesh as well as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and his granddaughter and UK MP Tulip Siddiq. It was also alleged that Mahmudur raised complaints about the protection afforded to the family members of Bangabandhu under the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Family Members’ Security Act. A copy of the complaint filed against Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman with a Manikganj court Dhaka TribuneMahmudur was also alleged to have presented false information on the killings and forced disappearances in Bangladesh. The complainant said he had come across Mahmudur's remarks on the print and electronic media and had decided to file a sedition case against him under section 124(a) of the Penal Code. Manikganj district unit Awami League's General Secretary Abdus Salam filed a defamation case of Tk1,000 with a Manikganj court over the same issue.

The case was filed under sections 123(a), 124(a), 500, 502 and 505 of the Penal Code. A former leader of Sylhet district unit Bangladesh Chhatra League also filed a Tk500crore defamation case against Mahmudur with a Sylhet court. Earlier on Sunday night, a general diary was filed over the “derogatory statements” of Mahmudur in Bogra. Sherpur upazila unit Awami League Joint Secretary Sultan Mahmud filed the GD with Sherpur police station. Mahmudur is also facing a sedition case in Khulna. Nazia Ahmed Borna, president of Khulna city's Ward 16 unit of Mahila League, filed the sedition case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court Monday. Cases against Mahmudur have also been filed in Natore, Kushtia and Kurigram.
