The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against Md Jahangir Alam, project director of the Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project under the Roads and Highways Department in Cox’s Bazar, over allegations of amassing illegal wealth worth over Tk29 crore and laundering over Tk127 crore through suspicious financial transactions.
The case was lodged on Tuesday by Assistant Director S M Rashedul Hasan, following approval from the commission’s headquarters on May 6.
According to the case statement, Jahangir Alam—son of Siddiq Ahmed and a resident of Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital—illegally acquired and possessed assets beyond his known sources of income amounting to Tk29.7 crore.
The ACC’s investigation, which reviewed documents from multiple sources, found that the official accumulated immovable property worth Tk49.63 lakh and movable assets valued at Tk31.2 crore, totalling Tk31.49 crore.
His personal and family expenses during this period were recorded at Tk68.55 lakh, bringing his total wealth to Tk32.18 crore.
In contrast, Jahangir Alam’s legitimate income stood at only Tk3.11 crore.
The remaining Tk29 crore-plus in assets is deemed inconsistent with his known income and has been treated as illicit under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
Furthermore, the case alleges that Jahangir conducted suspicious transactions amounting to Tk127.35 crore across 94 different accounts held with various banks and financial institutions.
The ACC said the funds were layered, transferred and converted in an attempt to conceal their illicit origins, violating Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
The offences are said to have occurred between 1999 and 2024 in Dhaka and other locations.
