The movement demanding the reinstatement of former Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem entered its sixth day Sunday, with students observing a complete shutdown and teachers holding a sit-in.
The CUET Teachers’ Association held the sit-in in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence from 11am to 1pm, while students brought out a procession and chanted slogans demanding Prof Sayem’s reinstatement.
The students rejected the newly appointed vice-chancellor on Saturday by displaying red cards. The CUET Teachers’ Association and Officers’ Association have also joined the movement, resulting in the suspension of all academic and administrative activities.
Students planned a sit-in at the university’s main gate and a street play and other programs on Sunday. They said they would not return to classes until Prof Sayem is reinstated.
On September 21, the government issued a notification removing Prof Sayem and appointing Prof Dr Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) as CUET vice-chancellor.
