AL-backed candidates lead city polls

Ruling Awami League (AL)-backed mayoral candidates for Dhaka north, Dhaka south and Chittagong city corporations are leading the polls.

According to results from 464 voting centers out of the total 1,093 in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), AL-blessed mayoral aspirant Annisul Huq got 2,53,997 votes.

Annisul’s main rival, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) endorsed candidate Tabith Awal bagged 1,87,896 votes.

In the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), AL-backed mayoral aspirant Sayeed Khokon polled 2,61,094 votes in 446 voting centres out of the total 889.

On the contrary, his nearest contestant Mirza Abbas got 1,44,667 votes.

In the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Awami League-supported mayor candidate AJM Nasir Uddin bagged 4,22,486 votes in 643 centres out of total 719.

Nasir’s rival BNP favourite mayoral aspirant Manjur Alam got 2,67,477 votes.

Vote counting began immediate after the conclusion of polling at 4pm and is still underway.

The polls to Dhaka north, Dhaka South and Chittagong city corporations started at 8am on Tuesday and continued without any break boycotted by BNP raising widespread irregularities, vote rigging.
