BNP's withdrawal won't result in violence, hopes UK envoy

Update : 28 Apr 2015, 10:58 AM

British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Gibson is disappointed at the withdrawal of BNP-endorsed candidates from the city corporation elections.

In a statement published on the British High Commission's Facebook page Tuesday afternoon, Gibson hoped the decision would not result in violence or disruption in Dhaka and Chittagong.

"All parties must ensure that their response to Tuesday’s events remains within the law. It will be important that all allegations of irregularity are investigated swiftly and impartially."

The responsibility remains with all parties, the Election Commission, and law enforcement agencies, to ensure that elections can take place in an orderly atmosphere to allow all voters the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights, he added.

He further said those candidates who are successful in being elected should seek to serve the needs and wishes of all the voters in both cities.
