Zonayed Saki announces rejection of poll result

Update : 28 Apr 2015, 09:09 AM

Expressing no-confidence in the authorities, Peoples Solidarity Movement (Gonosonhoti Andolon)-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North Zonayed Saki said his organisation would reject the poll result.

He made the announcement at a press briefing at the party's headquarters in the city's Hatirpool area on Tuesday afternoon.

Terming the polls unfair, he said: “We have decided to reject the poll result, after we observed a number of incidents of vote manipulation and irregularities.”

Alleging widespread rigging, he said: “The ruling Awami League has usurped the citizens' right to vote.”

Earlier in the day, the party asked its polling agents to quit all voting centres by 2pm.

When contacted, Dhaka city unit Political affairs Secretary of Student's Federation, a wing of Gonosonhoti Andolon, Refat-bin-Salam told the Dhaka Tribune: “The polling agents were withdrawn from the centres due to insecurity.”

Abul Hasan Rubel, central committee member of the party, told Dhaka Tribune Sub-Editor Jahan Mithun that they decided to reject the poll result, protesting the widespread irregularities of the authorities.

“Almost all the polling centres were taken over by the ruling party men, and our agents faced various questions while performing their duties.”

The BNP has also rejected the polls in both the city corporations under Dhaka and Chittagong City, bringing similar allegations.
