A leader of an outlawed party has been killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Jugnipasha under fultola upazila in Khulna.
The deceased is Sohel Rana, 26, second in command of Purbo Bangla Communist Party and son of Wahab Ali of Jessore.
Fultola police OC Iliyas Fakir said police arrested Sohel with a firearm from Kosba area on Friday evening.
“On the basis of information he provided, police conducted a drive to recover firearms in Telipukurpar area around 2:15am Saturday. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Sohel’s associates started firing and hurling bombs at them,” he said.
In retaliation, police fired back, that triggered a half-an-hour gunfight, leaving Sohel bullet wounded. He was declared dead when taken to Fultola Health Complex.
He said four policemen were also injured during the gunfight.
Police also recovered a six-shooter gun, 14 rounds of bullet and five hand bombs from the scene.
The body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC said.
Sohel was accused in seven cases filed with several police stations in Khulna and Jessore, added the official.
