22 killed in road accidents in 7 districts

At least 22 people were killed in road accidents in Dhaka, Manikganj, Sirajganj, Bogra, Chittagong, Mymensingh and Tangail districts yesterday.

Eight people, including four of a family, were killed as two buses hit a private car at Barobaria area in Savar, reports our correspondent.

The deceased were identified as Monowar Hossain, 32, his wife Farida Begum, 26, her two-year-old son Towhid and four-year-old son Toha, car driver Faruk, 29, Dilara Begum, her daughters Shami Aktar, and Ankita.

Dhamrai police station Officer-in-Charge Firoz Talukder said: “A Dhaka-bound bus of Asha Paribahan collided head-on with an Aricha-bound bus of Shohag Paribahan in Bathuli area around 2pm. At that time, a private car crashed into the bus that left four people dead on the spot and 10 others injured.”

The injured were admitted to a local hospital where four others succumbed to their injuries.

Our Manikganj correspondent reported that four people, including a child, were killed when a bus collided with a truck on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Saturia upazila in the afternoon.

Sirajganj correspondent said five people were killed and 27 others injured as a truck hit a bus at Baniagati area in Kamarkhand upazila early in the morning.

Bangabandhu Bridge Pashchim police station  Officer-in-Charge Helal Uddin said a truck hit a Dhaka-bound ‘Anik Paribahan’ bus around 2:30am and the bus overturned on the road, leaving two dead on the spot and 28 injured.

Another three died on the way to district general hospital.

In Bogra, Mamtaj Uddin, 45, and his wife Shefali Khatun, 35, were killed in a road accident in Dhunat upazila.

Locals said, a truck rammed into a bike at Sonahata Bazar area around 9am, leaving the duo dead on the spot.

A sexagenarian woman was crushed under the wheels of a truck on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur upazila  in the morning, reports Tangail correspondent.

The dead was identified as Nayanbala, 60.

Our Mymensingh correspondent reports: A pickup van driver was killed in a road accident in Maizbari area on the Mymensingh-Muktagacha Road under Sadar upazila.

The victim was identified as Ali Asgar, 38, hailed from Bajat Kutubpur in Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj district.

Police said the accident occurred when his pickup van collided head-on with a Mymensingh-bound truck at Maizbari around 8 am, leaving him dead on the spot.

The body was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police seized both the vehicles but the truck driver managed to flee.

A case was lodged in this connection.

A minor girl was killed in a road accident in the city’s Patenga sea beach area, reported our Chittagong correspondent.

The deceased was identified as Sumaya Begum, daughter of Nasir Uddin hailing from Nazir Para area.
